What’s On My Nightstand, Vol. 1

Anyone else out there love reading?

Ever since childhood, I have been a voracious reader. The 56 original Nancy Drews? Check. A journey across the prairie with the Ingalls fam? Duh. 100+ installments of The Babysitters Club series? You bet.

(For the record, my favorite member was Stacey.)

My reading tastes have (somewhat) matured since then, and I am always on the lookout for great new books to read. As a result, I thought it could be fun to start a new series called “What’s On My Nightstand” where I share what books I am reading and solicit your advice on what to read next.

Sound good to you? I’ll start:

The Orphan Master’s Son // The hermit kingdom absolutely fascinates me, so when I learned Adam Johnson went to North Korea to research this novel, I knew I had to read it. Recently awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction, this book has something for everyone: romance, adventure, thrill, politics. While I was reading it, I sometimes needed to remind myself this book was fiction—which I think is just a testament to how well-written it is.

#GirlBoss // I am about halfway through Sophia Amoruso’s business memoir, and I absolutely love it. I find her ability to hustle and her dedication to Nasty Gal very relatable. I love that she gives anecdotes about what she did differently than other eBay shop owners at the time, which goes to show that new ideas can be highly rewarded. In sum: a quick read with lots of actionable takeaways!

Big Little Lies // I discovered Liane Moriatry this summer after my friend recommended What Alice Forgot, and have had one of her novels on my nightstand since then. If you need a beach read this cold winter or love chick lit authors like Emily Giffin, this should be your pick.

///

I’d love to know what is on your nightstand currently
or if you have any favorite books I should add to my list!

  5. I LOVE reading too! All three of those books look really interesting. I’m currently working my way through the list of 100 Greatest Novels ever written, so right now I’m reading Madame Bovary. But I’m trying to alternate my reading list to help break it up a little bit – I typically read one from the list and then one for fun. I’ll have to check these out. Are you on goodreads?

    Just finished reading Big Little Lies! I really truly loved it! I’m currently in the middle of The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle, Black Moon by Kenneth Callhoun, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Lani Taylor and just starting Is Everybody Hanging Without Me by Mindy Kalling. I obviously can’t get enough reading in my life, haha!

      I will add all of those to my list. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me is one of my favorite celebrity memoirs! I love how she tells her stories as vignettes, but weaves them all together so nicely.

    You’ve taken me back to junior high with Stacey and The Babysitter’s Club. Right now I’m reading “The Signature of All Things” by Elizabeth Gilbert (of EatPrayLove fame) and a non-fiction book about Easter Island and the Moai Statues.
