How to Digitize Your Family Memories

Anyone else absolutely love to watch home videos?

When we were little, my sister and I loved to put together all sorts of shows and have my dad tape them so we could watch them right away. I think we enjoy watching them—and laughing at ourselves—now more than we did then.

Luckily for us, my Dad also thought to film the mundane things, like Saturday morning play sessions, and special events, like dance recitals and Halloween.

(Of course, we also have at least 30 minutes of film highlighting the evolution of his golf swing in the mix, but we generally fast forward right over those parts ;]).

But since we’re down to one working VHS player in the house with no plans to buy another, when I heard about Legacybox, I knew it was time to take the plunge and digitize our memories.

I’ve long been the family historian and keeper of all our digital memories, so I knew I needed to make sure we picked a VHS to DVD service that was reliable. The last thing I wanted to happen was to lose our tapes in transit or have them destroyed somehow in the digitization process.

After doing my research, I determined Legacybox was the premiere service, and was equally impressed with how easy they made the whole process.

You can have your home videos turned into DVDs by Legacybox in three easy steps:

  1. Select the size box that works best for your needs. We opted for the Family Box since we were just focusing on our videos this time around. (Photos are up next!)
  2. When your box arrives, fill it with your precious memories. We sent in ten video tapes to be digitized, but Legacybox also does photos and can convert pretty much any analog file format you can think of.
  3. Drop the box off at any mailbox and in 4-6 weeks, your memories will come back to you digitized!

Each Legacybox box is labeled with a scannable bar code and you receive a tracking sheet with the same barcode to ensure things don’t get lost or sent back to the wrong person. And, Legacybox sends you email updates throughout the digitizing process to keep you abreast of where your memories are in the queue.

But perhaps the best part of the whole process was watching the DVDs when they arrived on my doorstep. Amazing quality video that requires absolutely no rewinding once you’re done? Twist my arm.

  1. This is great!! I feel like soon after the hype of DVDs died down, people started neglecting their VHS and audio tapes because it was initially too pricey to do a conversion. Good to know there’s an affordable option out there! Also– great pics!

  6. I hear about Legacy Box a little while back (I think I even linked it in a coffee chat post) and I was so intrigued. I don’t have a lot of videos to archive but I would love to have all my prints cataloged and backed up. I’ve got boxes of them…

Wow, great post! That’s cool that you can transfer your old home movies. We have a ton of pictures from when me and my sister were little, but not really any videos. It’s such a priceless thing to have!

According to Legacybox website, they support these formats of “film”..

“8mm, Super 8, 16mm, with or without sound, any size.”

      Hope this helps!

PS: Has anyone else used this service and is willing to relate their results?

So EXCITED! All of the ideas I have needed to not be a looser hahah, with my kids and family! I’m the oldest of 5 and adopted. My family is amazing! My darling Mother turns 90 on July 13 and was born in 1925. Just reading her life history and being able to study the events of 1925, the Great Depression and history has pretty much taken me away to a different place!

So, ya, time travel is real! I will never have a clean house if I keep this up!
