Life Lately

Hi, friends! What’s been going on in your life lately?

It’s been a little over a month since we talked about life lately, so I thought I’d check in and share what’s new with me. I’d love to hear from you as well!

BEAUTY & THE BEAST /

I’m not a big movie theater goer anymore—I’m pretty sure I saw every release in theaters from 2005-2007 no matter how subpar the film was—but the second I saw the trailer for Beauty and the Beast months ago, I knew I had to see it in theaters.

M and I made a date out of it on Friday night, grabbing margs and Mexican food before heading over to our local theater with reclining seats. I am so glad we saw this one on the big screen. From start to finish, I was captivated. The music was great and the castle set was amazing. My only regret is not watching the cartoon version before I saw the film—there were parts of the movie I had forgotten since it’s been so long since I’d seen the original. I also wasn’t sure what they changed as compared to the cartoon. So, if you haven’t seen it yet—definitely try to watch the 1991 version before you go!

Lastly, since much of the all-star cast is stuck as their inanimate objects most of the film, M and I had no idea Stanley Tucci was the piano—and yelled out his name rather loudly during the ending credits. Several people in the theater got a laugh out of that!

2017 TRAVEL UPDATE /

Since we last talked, I have some fun travel updates! First, my sister and I booked a trip to Palm Beach, Florida in mid-June. Palm Beach has been on my list for a while, and I am so excited to go visit this colorful beach town. We’re staying at the Eau Palm Beach, and I know I definitely want to grab drinks at The Colony Hotel, eat at Nick & Johnnie’s, and check out The Breakers, but if you’re from there or have visited before, I would love more recommendations! We’re looking for a place to eat dinner on Saturday night and some sort of tour of the town—ideally one that’s on a boat.

In addition, my family has started talking about where we’d like to go on family vacation this summer and Savannah, Georgia is at the top of our list. I’ve been three times before—twice when I was really young and once when I was 12, but I am dying to go back since I don’t remember it very well and I know what a beautiful and historic southern city it is. Plus, no open container laws—need I say more?  So, if you have any advice on what to do in Savannah—we really want to take a ghost tour, where to eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner, or tips on places/things locals love but tourists have no ideas about, I’m all ears!

THIS WEEKEND IN CHICAGO /

Speaking of travel, I am heading to Chicago this weekend for my cousin Christina’s bachelorette! I am excited to celebrate one of my favorite cousins and spend more time in Chicago. I’ve been a few times over the years, including a very cold Halloween weekend back in 2014—it snowed!—but am excited to spend more time exploring the Windy City.

Deep dish pizza, Howl at the Moon, and The Hampton Social are all on the agenda, so I’ll be sure to share a recap of what we did soon here on the blog. Of course—since I will be out of town, blog content might be slower next week, so thanks in advance for bearing with me!

HOW I BUILT THIS THE PODCAST /

Y’all know how much I love the podcast Lady Lovin’, but since they only release new episodes once a week on Mondays, I was looking for something else to listen to as I get ready for work. My friend Olivia suggested I check out the NPR Podcast How I Built ThisY’all, love it and wanted to share in case you’re looking for a new one, too. (Thanks Olivia!)

Every week, the host, Guy, interviews a different entrepreneur or innovator and talks to them about how they came up with their idea or product. He talks to people from all sorts sectors and backgrounds, but some of my favorite interviews have been: Alli Webb of Drybar, Gordon Segal of Crate & Barrel, Andy & Kate Spade of Kate Spade, Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines, and Jane Wurwand of Dermalogica.

Now that I’ve crushed basically every episode, I’m in the market for new podcasts—so definitely let me know your favorites!

BLOG PHOTOGRAPHY /

One thing I really want to improve is the photography on my blog. This is always a work in progress and I think I’ve come so far from when I first started. But, I am such a perfectionist and am hitting a point again where I feel like my lack of knowledge is holding me back—especially in photo editing. As such, I really want to take a photography class so I can improve my own shooting and editing of the photos I take for this blog.

I also want to try collaborating with new photographers in the area on outfit photos. My favorite photographer is on leave for a few more months and my friends and I are busier than ever, so it’d be nice to have some other people on hand to help me out with that side of the blog. If you know anyone in the DC area who’s interested in photography for blogs—or maybe its you!—send them my way.

SPRING FINDS /

I’ve been doing a lot of shopping lately—I blame my tax return and all those spring sales brands are tempting me with! Of course, it’s still freezing out, so it’s harder to wear any of it, but I am counting down the days until I can leave my apartment without a coat!

This weekend, I picked up these black jeans with an unfinished hem from LOFT. I wasn’t sure if I would like that look, but I love them! I have such a hard time finding jeans that fit, but am never disappointed by the LOFT Modern Skinny Fit. I also picked up this circle lace off the shoulder dress and it’s stunning! If you’re on the shorter side, definitely get the petite length—the regular length fell below my knees!

I’ve also been wearing these strappy pointy-toe flats on repeat and stocked up on BP sunglasses.

And, of course, the off-the-shoulder top I’m loving right now and a beautiful bell sleeves dress.

I’d love to know what’s going on with your life lately!

All your travel plans sound so fun! I went to Chicago for the first time this year, and definitely recommend the Hampton Social! If you go in the early afternoon there’s pretty much no crowd 🙂 So getting that perfect Insta-pic is much easier ! Ha have fun!!

If you have Amazon Prime, they have amazing podcasts on Audible that are free with your prime account! My personal favorite so far has been Ponzi Supernova. It’s well done and completely addicting, especially if you like investigative journalism.

Working on a “locals” list for you on Savannah! It’s just such an awe-inspiring city. I just got back from my annual trip for St. Patrick’s Day and that open container law never disapoints 🙂

Ahh, my friend had her wedding welcome reception at Nick and Johnnie’s a few months ago! It’s such a fun bar (and the chairs are covered in Lilly fabric, eek!). You’ll love PB. It was my first time there, and I already can’t wait to go back.

  6. Podcasts are my go-to at work. For some reason, I work better and more productively with something going on in the background (cue podcasts or techno music). The ones I LOVE listening to include, “Lore Podcast,” which is turning into an Amazon series. It unpacks reasons why we are afraid of things and urban legends. New episodes are released every other week. I also love “Up & Vanished,” which is about a woman who disappeared in Georgia. It is updated in real-time, as someone was just convicted of the crime mere weeks ago. You would have the luxury of binge-listening, which is very easy to do (along with Lore IMO). I am also listening to “Stuff You Should Know” where I have already learned about CTE (the football brain injury disorder), block-heads and tardigrades. I’d love to know if you end up listening to any of these 🙂

Sounds like you have some exciting trips on the horizon. I love Palm Beach. The beaches and homes are beautiful and I love the downtown area. Sounds like the perfect girls trip! And if you need any recs re Savannah, I recently wrote a post about our side trip there when we were down in HHI. I would especially recommend checking out the Mirabelle Cafe! Their waffles are to die for!
