On Vacationing

The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray, right? (#HighSchoolEnglishFlashback)

It’s been on my to-do list to publish this last outfit shoot from the Southern Blog Society Conference since I returned in June. But, I finally got around to editing the pictures Kristyn took for me while I was on vacation in Ocean Isle Beach a few weeks ago.

So instead of talking about this versatile white v-neck dress I snagged from Nordstrom and paired with my favorite fun sandals and Escapada tassel necklace, I thought we could talk about how much I suck at vacationing.

Yes, you read that right—I suck at vacationing.

Tell me I’m not the only one who dreams of leaving town, only to constantly check your phone, work email, and the national news while you’re away? (Admittedly, I am a news junkie. I’ll own that.)

In fact, I actually made a to-do list for vacation. A to-do list. And no, it did not read, “sand, sun, surf, sleep, repeat.” It was more like a laundry list of tasks I’ve wanted to do for a while, but can just never make the time during my daily life—case in point, writing this post.

Then, halfway through vacation—which just happened to coincide with the day we get free lunch at work at and I missed Mexican food week (the horror! because it’s my fave)—I actually wanted to go home and go back to work.

My beloved Blue Moon on the beach time? Yeah, I was pretty much over it. And I was definitely over the sand. And how it gets everywhere.

At first, I felt like I was “wasting” my vacation and this really stressed me out, especially given the fact my entry-level job isn’t exactly super lenient with days off.

Then, I realized I was just tired and needed a good night sleep, some alone time, and a glass of water or two to get back into Blue-Moon-on-the-beach shape.

And finally, I came to the realization that you know what, I must have a pretty awesome day-to-day life if I am actually excited to go home after vacation. Some people dread their daily lives, and while mine isn’t 100% great 100% of the time, it’s pretty darn great most days.

And now that, that’s something to raise a Blue Moon too.

My husband and I also have a hard time on “relaxing” vacations. Turns out that we prefer trips where we get explore new cultures, go to shows, wander museums, etc. It’s taken many failed beach vacation trips to realize we prefer Europe over Costa Rica but you live and learn. 🙂

OMG I know what you mean! When I’m on vacation I always am thinking of how I can use my time off to get things done that I don’t have time for in “normal” life – it’s very hard for me to just sit on a beach with tequila in hand and do NOTHING. Even then I always feel like I SHOULD be reading a book. It’s the multitasker’s perpetual problem! 🙂

Also, may I say, this outfit looks SO cute on you. I am seriously lusting those heels! xo
