Happy Humpday! I’ve got a treat for y’all today.
In my 2016 reader survey—I’ll post the results sometime next week!—and a few of you gals asked for more beauty content. I’ll be honest—I really don’t plan on expanding this vertical too much over the next year. I love a good mani/pedi and often do my own gel nails at home, and have a skincare routine that works for me. The biggest breakthrough in my beauty routine as of late was that I started using an amazing new flat iron.
But if you’re looking for a cat eye tutorial or a roundup of the best bronzers for summer, you’re probably not going to find it here. My makeup skills are minimal at best—why weren’t YouTube videos a thing when I was in middle school?!—and I need the step-by-step guides still myself.
Shampoo and conditioner, however, now that I can get behind. (And use without a six-minute YouTube video tutorial.)
So when Function of Beauty offered me a customized shampoo and conditioner set to try and report back on, I jumped at the chance. And when I say customized, I truly mean customized—you pick the color, the smell, and what you want the product to do for you.
Getting your own personalized set is easier than you may think. I just went to Function of Beauty’s beautifully designed website and started an order. The first thing you’re asked to identify is your hair structure. Mine is really fine and really straight, so some shampoos and conditioners gunk up my hair really easily, but this formula takes all of that into account.
After that, you select your hair goals. (And no, JoJo Fletcher is not an option.)
I really want to grow my hair longer, and protect my recent hair color while also strengthening my hair. And because of my aforementioned fineness, I am always looking for ways to add volume.
After you select your goals is the fun part—selecting the color and fragrance. You really can’t go wrong, but I selected the grapefruit hibiscus smell and I wish there was a way to share that over the Internet because it is really divine. You also have the opportunity to add your name to the bottle!
Added bonus: when your customized set arrives, you get a card with a personalized hair regimen laid out for you based on your needs and goals. I found this really helpful as I’ve often wondered how many times a week I should be washing my hair—they recommend four to five times, which has been working out super well!
I’ve been using the product for about two weeks now, and really like how it’s going so far. I will say if you’re not big onto scented shampoos and conditioners, definitely go scentless as my hair still smells like grapefruit hibiscus nearly 24 hours later.
At $26 for an 8 ounce set and $39 for a 16 ounce set, it’s a bit more expensive than a drugstore option but definitely cheaper than many of the salon products I’d been gravitating toward. So if you’ve been unable to find an off-the-shelf shampoo and conditioner that work well for you, I definitely recommend Function of Beauty.
Thank you to Function of Beauty for gifting me a custom shampoo and conditioner set for review. As always, opinions are my own, and thank you for supporting the brands that keep A Touch of Teal’s doors open!
