A Day in the Life

Today we’re mixing it up a bit from the usual style + life content here on A Touch of Teal because I thought it would be fun to do a one of those “a day in the life” posts to give y’all a glimpse my daily routine. I think part of what fascinates people about blogging is the voyeurism that comes along with it—I know I definitely like learning about what my favorite bloggers do everyday or more about their lives offline. So this past Monday, I set out to document what a typical day looks like for me so you could get to know the offline Katie a little bit better. And while no two days are the same—here’s the sneak peak into how I spend my time.

a day in the life

8:38 am (Waking Up + Getting Ready): I usually set my alarm for 8:20, but some mornings it just doesn’t happen. I packed my lunch the night before, so I got dressed, threw everything in my bag, and headed out the door.

a day in the life9:00 am (Running for the Metro): One of the highlights of my day is picking up my Washington Post Express for my ride to work from Sharon—she’s there rain, shine, snow, hot, and cold and she always tells me to have a great day. On this particular morning, I walked right down the stairs to find an Orange Line train pulling up to take me the three stops to work. #score

a day in the life9:20 am (Arriving at Work): Even though I don’t drink coffee, the kitchen at work is always the first place I head to talk with my coworkers who do drink coffee about what they did last night and the day ahead. I eat breakfast at my desk, so I make whatever I brought while I am visiting with the coffee aficionados.

a day in the life 9:30 am (Checking Email Over Breakfast): While eating breakfast, I begin to tackle my inbox, and prioritize what tasks need to be done first. On this particular day, I was eating a leftover breakfast sandwich from my amazing brunch with Kate at Copperwood Tavern the previous day, but I usually go for yogurt, fruit, and granola or these amazing hash brown egg white nests

a day in the life

11:00 am (Candy Break): I have a sweet tooth, especially at work! After reviewing some new text for a website revision, replying to some emails about an event next month, and looking at the invite comps for the same event, I indulged in some Lindor chocolates. My coworkers and I may or may not have traded around for our favorite colors—I like the light blue ones best!

a day in the life1:00 pm (Errands + Lunch): Do not let this picture deceive you, the mall near my office is pretty much crap—which actually is great for my wallet. But, there is a CVS there, so I picked up a few things, namely more shampoo, and then ran back to the office to eat some leftovers from brunch with Monique at Artie’s on Saturday. (Notice the theme here…)

a day in the life

2:30 pm (Caffeine): Every day, I say I am not going to take a trip to the vending machine for that fifty cent caffeine kick. Yet everyday, there I am. I spent the afternoon enjoying my diet soda while refining a master task list for the event next month, and prepping for a brainstorming meeting the following day.

a day in the life4:30 pm (Leave Work for Class): The Georgetown Campus I head to is in Chinatown, and it takes me about 45 minutes to get there via Metro. Luckily, there were no delays for me, and I passed the time by finishing up my Washington Post Express and reading some of the book we were assigned.

a day in the life5:20 pm (Class Starts): My Monday class is all about Corporate Communications, and on this particular day we were discussing leadership communications. We discussed a Harvard Business Review Case Study, juxtaposed the BP CEO’s and the Toyota CEO’s responses to their respective crises, and, best of all, watched clips of Scandal.

a day in the life

7:50 pm (Chat with Molly): After class, I meet my BFF Molly outside (she’s in my professor’s later class!), and we talk about the L’Enfant Metro debacle and about how our days are going (read: how much we hate cold weather). We part ways while I’m still debating whether or not I should pick up Chipotle for dinner.

a day in the life

8:30 pm (Arrive Home!): …And you guessed it, after stopping off at Chipotle—I can sense buying dinner is going to be a major vice for me while in school—I arrive home and eat my delicious burrito bowl. My roommate, Jessy, and I began mini-marathoning Friends while I answer some work emails.

a day in the life9:30 pm (Gym): I just got a Fitbit (!), and am playing a friend in the “ workweek hustle” challenge, so I headed to the gym for a quick workout. I ran for half an hour while watching Full House (even though I’ve seen every episode at least four times), and then lifted some free weights.

a day in the life

10:15 pm (Prep for Tomorrow): I packed my breakfast and lunch for the following morning while I mentally scanned my closet for an outfit to wear. I don’t usually lay out my ensemble, but thought I would for the sake of this post.

a day in the life

10:45 pm (Last Minute Blog Tasks): Since I wrote my post for the following day this weekend, all I had to do was give it one last read-over and schedule out my Facebook and Twitter posts. Usually, if I have to write a blog post the night before, I start right when I get home to ensure I have enough time to finish it.

a day in the life 11:30 pm (Bedtime!): I always try to read before I go to bed, even if it is just a few pages. I’ve always loved reading, but out of necessity, forwent reading for pleasure in college. Since I started working, I’ve gotten back into the groove, and currently am loving all of Liane Moriarty’s novels—they are the perfect beach or bedtime read.

We should be friends on Fitbit! I LOVE mine so far. I am very anal about getting my steps, granted it has only been a week. What is a day in the life without the Meridian gym? Hope to see you there soon, text me when you’re in town again. We can talk about our love of Trina Turk ;]! Miss ya!

  11. Wow! I’m incredibly impressed with how much you’re able to squeeze into one day! I’m especially in awe of how after a long day, you’re able to hit the gym and edit your blog! My hat goes off to you! I love this peek into my fellow bloggers’ lives! It’s fun to see the everyday side of my onscreen friends 🙂
